For
the making of the movie "Master and Commander", the studio
purchased the "HMS
Rose", a sail-training vessel built to resemble a
small frigate of the late 1700s. The carpenters then went to workand
converted the ship to a Hollywood movie set. Very little of the film
was shot on the Surprise/Rose, but she had to be "made up"
to look pretty realistic.
Today
she lies moored at the San Diego Maritime Museum on loan,
and open to the public. She is starting to look somewhat shop- worn,
and her fate is uncertain, as there are presently no plans for a aequel.
