United States Brig Niagara

This model was a commission, which I undertook because I wanted to see what current model kits were like. Also, I wanted to see if I could "kit-bash" a model into presentable condition.

The kit was from Model Shipways and was easy to construct. I cut out much of the center portion to make an open main hatch and used my own hand made blocks and cordage. I also modeled furled sails for the first time.

The display base incorporated some artifacts salvaged from the original brig of 1813.

Overall, I was content with the outcome. My wife admired the colors, so I ended up making a second one for her. I plan to mount it on a "water" base.

I do not plan to build a lot of kits in the future. They are faster. But that is about all they offer.
